That IS absolutely true. Most of us have different programming and usage background and habit around money markets.
"Experienced traders understand that the program has to fit what they are doing. The high cost of switching is only acceptable if they see a benefit in profits greater than the cost. They know a particular program doesn't make the money, they have to make money from the program, so a different TA software package has to give them some kind of edge."
You see it correctly: experienced traders need to know direction of development in system they use from datafeed, hardware and software solution. I have a mechanical trading system
in MS but improvements what I want to issue can't be easily developed in MS. I spent more money on MDK + sample Delphi programs for .dll programming than price of AB and still want to change platform.
"Every TA program requires add-ons for one thing or another. Every company selling a TA program has a lot of add-ons for sale including independent products like TradeSim."
+ metastkuser,
"But I was asking about the combination of MS/TradeSim versus AB, and ignoring costs (obviously AB is cheaper). I'm not convinced AB is better than MS/TS."
TradeSim is a great app. User's guide is a must for all beginner system developer. I spend few weeks with TradeSim in 2003 but discovered main disadvantage it can't be used for intraday data. It was only capable to analyze systems based on daily or longer timeframes. That was two main version earlier but searching in actual version's guide and forum for
"intraday" shows not much more results. It seems they still do not developed intraday part.
"Another issue is the ability of a company to survive. It's a real pain to switch and have your TA company go broke. …but it's a question you better know the answer to before you invest a lot of money into putting together your platform."
That is also true. As I know AB depends on only one main developer. I'll try to meet him because I don't live very far from his hometown…: -)
I believe both packages can be used for real trading in trading for living.
If anybody seeks more or totally automatic usage in trading, trade monitoring then AB seems to provide more developing space in its recent version. User feedback and realtime trading seems main improvement direction in its new versions.
P.S.: I can show a truly easy comparison for future. I see no big improvements in MS since 7.22 version in database-,
programming language-, system tester limitation while AB gain plenty in last 3 years to become true competitor.
