FWIW Larry Winbauer is developing a synthetic
contract generator. It is currently in beta and has a couple of features - but
is extremely promising.

As and when it's final it will be most useful for
generating testing data.

Generator
I use Excel to generate patterns.
Make a
column for each ticker, per, date, open, high, low, close, vol,
o/i
IBM, D, 5/29/2005, 121,125,110,123,624589, 0
Check the
Downloader manual (mine is on page 78) for formats.
Then save the file
as a Comma Separated Value myfile.csv. The downloader will read this
type of file and convert it to the MS internal format.
If you want
to add noise, Excel has a random number generator function that you
can add to the formula to simulate noisy
prices.
