What we have in mind would be some tool that would allow you to
update to whatever format you please - java and web driven - and
that somehow connects to our database.
Look, all of this is just an idea at the moment, but it is not
the first time we have contemplated such a thing. There is a
local company that supplies economic data, but at approx USD150
a month, but then it updates spreadsheets, presentations etc.
automatically. Quite fancy, but not really that difficult to
do. Once we have the stuff in the database, to get it out in
Metastock/CSV/Excel/eViews/xxx won't be such a big issue. But
to properly distribute the stuff, incrementally and so on, is
where we have to apply our minds a bit. Also, we update FRED
manually once a week, as we do with a lot of data that we
gather. But for something like this, we have to automate it
and somehow keep data current in from Japan to the US.
Most of our work is done on Unix, so we can very very easily
automate stuff and do fancy number crunching and typesetting.
But a real pain then becomes all the proprietary Micro$oft
formats. We have done lots of work with Excel lately and have
good libraries to read/write out spreadsheet files and so on.
So we can steam ahead with this as well.
Analysis we already do on the local economic stuff, such as GDP
and so on, but once we have the weel rolling, we can add analysis
graphs, revision highlighters, time series projections and so
on to the lot. But this is the sweetener.....
Finally, living in South Africa..... We have this magnificent
telecoms monopoly that makes internet frightfully expensive. Then
we have problems with eCommerce. There are new rules, by the
credit card companies, that force you to go into a partnership of
sorts with a local bank if you wish to remit payments to that
country. So most of the guys such as paypal and worldpay simply
don't support us (or Mexico or whatever is too small to matter)
any longer. The local banks of course enjoy this, and you should
see some of the rates they charge.
The least of our worries is to get the holy grail as far as web
design is concerned.........but we'll have to address that as well.
Maybe, just to start with something, we must pick just five series.
What would you most like to see? Here is my selection. This will
just a test and for free, so please, anybody that is still reading,
what do you want in Metastock format.
My selection:
- US real effective exchange rate
- US GDP
- US M3
- US CPI
- US effective federal funds rate
