This is to create a Macro to copy data from the Excel file containing the EOD for 20 scrips and write them to different Excel files

  1. Organize the EOD consolidated file into  Ticker, Date   etc
  2. Copy the ColA containing the TICKER data into another file and save it as DAILYMAST or whatever name you prefer.
  3. In DAILYMAST create a HYPER link between each SYMBOL under TICKER and its individual scrip file. (Hyper link is created by clicking INSERT in the Excel toolbar then choose Hyperlink….)
  4. Do this for all 20 scrip’s and save the file
  5. Copy all the Cols from the EOD consolidated file and paste it next to  ColA in DAILYMAST so that the SYMBOLS in ColA and ColB are aligned.
  6. In DAILYMST go to the TOOLS option in the toolbar and choose MACRO,   click record new MACRO
  7. Now go the first row and highlight Date, Open etc ….then  Copy . Click the SYMBOL in ColA with hyperlink to the individual scrip file. The scrip file will open, paste the copied data, save and close the scrip file. Return to the DAILYMAST file
  8. Now you could either repeat Step 7 for all the scrips and then stop the MACRO recording or stop here.
  9. For the next day’s data  all you need to do is repeat Step 5  and then run the MACRO.

Thomas,

Thank you very much  for your detailed step by step instructions.
I have managed to create the charts same steps you mentioned.
I have been updating the charts EOD  using the  downloader, by adding the data to the columns in the downloader file for each symbol separately.
Is there any otherway to update the EOD data?? can you pls elaborate more on using Macros to update EOD

Thanks
Regards,
Guss

Subject: Re: [Metastockusers] importing Data from Excel into Metastock

I used to get into a tangle when trying this in the initial stages. As the Help says -

To convert from Excel file to Metastock you need to do the following-

  1. The data must be in columns.
  2. Each column must have a heading that describes what data is in the column.  The only required columns are DATE and CLOSE.  Optional columns are TICKER, PER, OPEN, HIGH, LOW, VOLUME, and O/I.  The column names must be spelled as shown here.  The column headings must all be on the same row.
  3. The dates must be in the mm/dd/yy style and must be formatted as text labels

……to add to the above

1)     My source Excel files have the following

TICKER

DATE

OPEN

HIGH

LOW

CLOSE

VOLUME

O/I

2)     Make sure the DATE is in TEXT format.

3)     The TICKER cell is also  in TEXT format in my source file.

4)     Different  TICKER or SYMBOL needs to be a separate Excel source file

5)     The TICKER or SYMBOL should match your destination file

6)     My set of Excel files are in one folder and the destination or Metastock files are in another folder

7)     In the downloader choose TOOLs choose CONVERT

8)     In source file type choose EXCEL, specify  the folder,  Click  on Browse.

9)     Highlight the source files then click OPEN.

10) Now go to the Destination section choose Metastock, then indicate the folder. Click BROWSE . all the files in the folder will be shown, click SAVE.

11) You come back to the CONVERT screen. Go to the OPTIONS  and make the appropriate entries.(You could increase the max error msgs to 10,000 since the data conversion stops when the Max amount is reached – the data after conversion seems fine in spite of error msgs ! ) Click the OK button for the conversion to take place.

I download my EOD as a Excel file. Using a macro each symbol is saved in a different Excel file, I update the MS data through the above process.

Hope this helps !

PS - the source file is used for charting by MS
