Just to report that I installed XP service pack 2 yesterday and have
encountered no problems with Metastock 9 or Downloader. When I called Equis
ahead of time they said they had encountered problems with earlier versions
of Metastock and Downloader, which were mostly fixed by the methods already
described on these posts, but had not received any calls from people using
Metastock 9, which he said had been tested against XP SP1 before release.

We have a few dozen users using both our data platform and Metastock
utilising Virtual PC on a Mac platform. Quite a number of them have been
using it successfully for a few years now. Several are using Windows 2000
and Windows XP as their virtual environment, and a lesser number with
Windows 98.

I run a similar platform, VMWare, for testing our end-user applications
against multiple environments such as Win 98, Win98SE, Win ME, Win 2000, Win
XP and all of these also with and without the Windows Update patches/service
packs.

It's amazing what differences Microsoft have made over the years to trip up
software developers! Sometimes all it takes is one misplaced backslash on
one environment to stop it from all working....

Sometimes I wish Equis would do the same and test the MetaStock systems
against multiple operating system configurations and put some help on their
web site. I remember when I was running a Windows XP release candidate and
reporting to Equis how to get it working with Windows XP. They weren't even
trying Windows XP at all, even though its release was imminent.

Moral of the story: Keep good backups. You may find software
compatibilities with any of these "upgrades"/fixes/patches that are
installed that may affect one or more of your programs. With a decent
backup regime, you can go back to something that is known to "work" and save
yourself the heartache of troubleshooting on the vendors' behalf.

Best regards,
Richard Dale.

Virtual pc is a Microsoft program. You can get some information at this web
site.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx

I have no information on its speed and reliability. Microsoft says that you
can run a variety of operating systems on your PC and you can easily switch
from one to another.

One problem with switching to a MAC is that most software is only made for
the PC platform.
