The PC with 512MB is the fastest in your test.
That doesn't suprise me at all.
256MB is not enough to run Win XP on. Even if MS says it runs at
64MB. That just a much nonsense as their claim that it runs on a
233Mhz CPU
If memory types are the same you could pull out memory from the 'slow'
PCs and put it in your fastest PC (with 256MB) and see if your time is
better now. If so you could decide to buy extra memory.
512MB memory costs about USD 80
Up to a certain point more memory (and faster HDs) makes more
diffrence then a few extra Mhz in your CPU.
