Yes, but you can usually find a source to cut and paste from (cut from &
paste? Any grammarians out there?). So if you wanted to do top down
analytics on Dow Jones industry sectors, or BTK or HGX or whatever, you can
find the list of component stocks on the appropriate website, cut & paste
into notepad and then follow the manual procedure. Then you can compare the
indeces (eg for relative strength), select the ones you want and then do a
similar triage on the underlying stocks. It's a pain if you want to do the
entire market (many man hours) but for some key indices its ok.
For lists of indices/ETFs etc., look at the websites for Dow Jones, iShares,
CBOE, NASDAQ, AMEX, PHLX etc. Or just google the ones you want.

Actually you can create your own custom industry groups and import them. I
did it by building the symbol list in Notepad and saving it as a .sym file.
The methodology is described in pp60ff of the most recent manual. The only
hassle with this method is that you are creating another level of
duplication of securities in downloader (in my current setup most stock
prices are being downloaded 2 or even three times - not the most efficient
process!).

spreadsheet to your metastock..and group them according to your
industry group u have created.
This is not possible using the downloader as is unless you buy a
third party add-on software to do this. However, the new metastock
ver 9 and the data cd creates those security files and group them
into their industry group. But you do have to follow the industry
group Reuters created, not your own..
