I had a similar problem once I installed the latest MS security update ( about 2 weeks ago).
I logged the problem at MS support and got a solution. In my case, and I do not know the reason why, some of the system files did not get upgraded causing MS to crash. Once I got the solution evrything was back to normal, and it had nothing to do with MS but with XP!
