Standard and Poor's has a proprietary model. I don't know how they
figure it out. Ford uses the Value Momentum Multifactor model, which
they've developed on 20 years.
The VMO model picks the 20 stocks out of 4500 that have the best
combination of earnings momentum, valuation on price to earnings, and
price momentum. They use a weighted average.
Rather than type out the last 20 years here's the summary.
Since 1974
Ford Selected Stocks 53553%
Dow Jones 3852%
All 4500 stocks 623%
That comes out to about 27% compounded a year on buy and hold.
