Hi:
UA's MetaStock data format which in fact has been incompatible with MetaStock, now appears to be fixed. This problem would occur for me, only when I appended each day's download, which takes 7 or 8 minutes (P4, 1.8), and I got around the problem by doing a complete database rewrite on a daily basis, which takes an hour.
I've reported the above problem on the MetaStock lists and have advised people not to use UA, and the purpose of this post is to let folks know that this problem appears to be fixed. The problem has occurred for several months and even several years, since the introduction of UA about 5 years ago. I have used UA only because it provides cash commodity prices that no other data provider, including Reuters, offers. I use cash prices in conjunction with futures prices to make my trading decisions. (I follow a proprietary system by Bruce Gould.)
After hammering on UA technical support for many months and receiving answers that I was the only person in the world who was experiencing this problem, they finally consulted with the MetaStock technical staff a couple of months ago and discovered that indeed, MetaStock was picking up decimal position information from two different sources within the MS DLL. UA was totally unaware of this and thought there was only one source in the DLL. UA has worked closely with MS technicians on this, and even MS didn't know what their DLL was doing because it had been created so long ago that through programmer turnover they had lost knowledge of the DLL details. Bottom line is that they worked together, and the problem appears to have been fixed. I say "appears" because I am the Beta tester and have run the append process for two days of download without any problems whatsoever. In the past it sometimes took a couple of days for the problem to manifest, but I'm pretty much convinced that they have solved the problem not only because it works for me, but because they were able to pinpoint where the problem originated.
I have given them so much bad press over this problem that I feel I must now let folks know that it is solved. For those of you who use UA, the solution will be released with version 2.7.4. That should be released within the next two or three weeks. For those who don't use UA, it has in fact been given the top rating for a data provider by Futures Magazine for several years. I have no connection with UA or CSI, and will not receive any compensation or reduced lease rate for testing the program or for writing this. Just feel strongly they should be given credit where credit is due. They are more expensive than Reuters, but their data is cleaner, they make corrections as problems are found (and the program corrects your data base), and their download times are better than other providers.
Thought you might have an interest.
