Straight from the manual;
"The Professional and Enterprise Editions have the ability to read
and import ASCII text file versions of the trade database. This means
that you are not limited to using Metastock to generate your trade
database files. For example you could import a trade database that
was generated with another program such as Excel™, the Notepad text
editor or another charting package such as Trade Station™ for
example."
This is a very useful feature even if you have MS.
