You asked>> 1. Is it correct that an ATR level that is high for one stock will not be high for another (therefore difficult to scan).Answer>> In Dollar & Cents it is true. What you can do is relate that Dollars and cents ATR Range to the Closing price of the stock and make ita percentage. In that way you can then compare across stocks as to what has had the highest volatility in ATRs.
Question>> 2. I read in one place that low volatility is associated with bottoms and in another place that low volatility indicates an approaching top. Can't be both, can it?
Answer>> Depends on the instrument you are trading and the type of market you are in. Most Stocks exhibit that behaviour. Indexes tend to get scared away from lows in a bull market and hang around the highs when making tops.
Commodities grovel around the lows and reject off the highs aggressively. You should also watch the volume at tops or bottoms you may just see a pattern emerge.
Warmest Regards

I hope this discussion continues. I have never really looked at scanning for volatility before but it certainly makes sense. Reading the MS manual about ATR and volatility leaves me more than a little confused.

I'm fond of ATR and easy to write scans using ATR.

Subject: [Metastockusers] Indicator?
I'm interested in refining my scans by filtering for stocks that regularly move enough to make a swing trade worth my while. On the one hand I want volatility, but on the other hand not too much volatility. I like stocks that move in a somewhat orderly fashion.I'm hoping some of you technophiles will have some suggestions. So what would be a good indicator to add to my filter and experiment with? Beta? ATR?Thanks,HaroldTo unsubscribe from this group, send an email to:Metastockusers-unsubscribe@xxxxxxxxxxxYour use of Yahoo! Groups is subject to the Yahoo! Terms of Service.
