As I mentioned in an
earlier post, this shifting one mov() forward and keeping an unshifted
mov() on the same plot, was developed by Curtis Dahl back in the 1950's.
His published indicators could be calculated with pencil and paper and
maybe an adding machine. Now that we have computers and software, that can
calculate more elaborate indicators.

His real name was
something like Buhler and he was a prof in Indiana (It may have been Indiana
State or University of Indiana). He developed many technical analysis methods
and became quite wealthy. I think he chose the pen name "Curtis Dahl" as a
joke as Buhler was a Prof of aeronautics and Dahl was a soldier of fortune pilot
who was shot down and captured by Franco's forces in the Spanish Civil War in
the mid 1930's.

Are
you sure you aren't looking to plot the MA with the shift forward? The
method of shifting it forward (in which case, your original idea of
ref(c,3,e),-3) is the correct formula) is used to "delay" the moving average a
bit to prevent whipsaws. Bill Williams talks about it in his books and Tom
Joseph of Advanced GET also uses the concept.

David, I'm not sure what use plotting today's data three periods in the past
will do?

Ref(Mov(Close,3,e),<FONT
color=#ff0000>+3) plots a current 3 period ema point 3
periods in the past. What is the value of this?

Thanks Lionel & David,
Ok I've found!
A shifted -3 MA is
Ref(Mov(Close,3,e),<FONT

Thanks

ref(mov(close,3,e),-3) should
work. What do you mean what is not a -3 shift? What do you
get?
The Metastock moving average
window allows shifting a MOV up, down, left, right.

Try Mov(C,3,E) - Ref(Mov(C,3,E),-3)

Subject: [Metastockusers] Shifted
moving average
Hi!
Does anyone know the syntax for a shifted moving average?
For example a mov(close,3,e) shifted -3?
I've tried: ref(mov(close,3,e),-3) but it's not a -3 shifted
moving average.
Thanks a lot.
