[Metastockusers] Re: more tidbits about 8.0 JIM

Hi, Ron:

First off, to clarify: the MS 8.0 formula language is totally
unchanged from 7.2 - there is no reason that plugins would not work
with it, UNLESS (possibly) they directly read from or write to the
Files. The tech said that all their official plugins will work
fine. He also said that an about-to-be-released plugin from PariTech
had to be pulled at the last minute since it would not work with the
new 8.0 files structure. Since he said a new version of the MS
DevKit was not yet available, it would seem that developers are in
limbo for a while, re file I/O engine development.

Re the future versions beyond 8.x - the implication of the tech's
comments were that the new language would be completely different,
more robust, with looping, etc like Jscript or something similar. My
*interpretation* of those comments is that legacy code would not
work.

However, it's not at all inconceivable to me that they might build a
conversion or translation engine to bring the old stuff over. Having
done some things like this in the past, I can tell you it is a HUGE
project to create something like that which is reliable and
comprehensive.

I *suspect* that's one of the big reasons why they have waited so
long to do this. There are a lot of experienced and loyal customers
out here, with gazillions of lines of working code, that may well end
up jumping ship if MS fails to support the legacy stuff when/if they
transition.

We'll just have to wait and see.
