I've just tested both methods I mentioned in my first reply. They both work.
If using Word to change spaces to commas the document needs to be saved as a
.txt file so Excel can read it.  However it is also possible to import your
data "as is" into Excel 2000 and specify the use of "space" as a delimiter.
Then it's simply a matter of saving the file in .csv format (comma
seperated).
