Before you reinstall, I'd put some known good RAM memory in there and see
what happens. Do you have another computer you could steal from for a test?

It's gotten really cheap these days. My guess is that a couple of these 128
MB chips
http://www.crucial.com/store/PartSpecs.asp?imodule=CT32M64S4D7E at $32.39
or a 512 MB chip
http://www.crucial.com/store/PartSpecs.asp?imodule=CT64M64S4D75 at $62.99
would be worth a try.

Also, are you using the *original* cd, or a copy? If a copy it may have its
own errors cauing your problems.
