Hi Neo,
Yes, a tick represents a trade. Most data vendors will transmit every tick,
but some will transmit a tick only when there is a change. So, if you are
watching the QQQs "tick" at 43.04 as they are now, you may see several
trades (ticks) go off at that price, or, you may not see a tick until the
price moves from 43.04. In either case, you won't have to wait very long.
A very active security like the QQQ, or one of the big NASDAQ stocks, will
trade about 25K or 30K times per day. Eyeballing the QQQ for this week, it
is running between 25K and 33K per day.
Some indicies, like the $SPX will only tick around 1800 times per day, since
they update only about every 10 seconds.
The NQ, or NASDAQ mini futures, will trade in the neighborhood of 45K times
per day. This is the very high end, as it is a very active contract. The
S&P mini will tick about 38K times per day.
Metastock Pro has a limitation of 65,500 records per security. So for the
QQQ you might get two days of tick data loaded into Metastock. For the NQ
or ES, it'll be just over 1 day worth of data.
Several other software packages like Tradestation2000i and NeoTicker will
allow a user to load as many points of data that the computer hardware
(memory, harddrive, etc.) will allow.
