bypass VRAMDIR: (K)eine RAM disk for Windows 95
VRAMDIR unites the advantages of a RAM disk in itself, done thereby however
without the typical disadvantages. By an ingenious trick it generally
accelerates fixed disk accesses and thus Windows. Since there is Windows 95,
many users look a genuine 32-Bit-RAM-Disk up, because the provided operates
only in the 16-Bit-Kompatibilitaetsmodus. But it does not give until today.

Instead the Virtual software corporation offers now
however a beginning the unusual at first sight more ingenious on the second
view for the use of the fallow-being situated RAMs. By Setup the user defines
directories on his fixed disks, into whom from now on physically nothing more
is written - all files land in the RAM. This principle eliminates at one blow
all with usual RAM disks accompanying restrictions, like additional drive
letters, specific cluster sizes and partition information. They prevent a
dynamic groessenaenderung with DOS-BASED RAM disks. Too German: The RAM disk
had to be produced with a fixed size. If it were not too small, it was
excessive and occupied unnecessarily much RAM.
  The 32-Bit-Treiber VRAMDIR produces a
virtual file system in the RAM. The small vxd file operates by
the renouncement of fixed disk-similar characteristics completely dynamically.
Only so much memory is thus occupied, how also actually are at data in the
VRAMDIR directories. To the easier understanding and a fast check the program
is after the installation also than data source in the system monitor. At
present used storage space, number of file operations and quantity of read and
written bytes are representable and help during the optimization of the
system. By default are all the operating system admitted temporary directories
(C:\Temp, D:\Windows\Temp etc..) to the virtual bypass announced. Further,
like Netscapes Internet Cache, special directories or own set in certain
applications, which are to be used in typical RAM disk manners (to unpack,
tests etc. installs), to add are manually over a dialog box accessible in the
system control. Modifications require in each case a restart of Windows.

That performance gain actually which can be
obtained depends strongly on the used applications and the rate of the
computer and the fixed disk. Typical candidates for noticeable improvements
are Mailpacker or compilers, which do not use 32-bittig the disk free space,
but solid temporary files create. But even if owing to fastest computer and
newest Windows-95-Software in practice no difference becomes noticeable,
VRAMDIR reduces a fragmenting of the fixed disk by the decrease of the fixed
disk activity. In the test the software operated perfectly. The more data in
the virtual directories, the fewer memory are available Windows land. The
transition for storing externally and the return of free memory occur
smoothly. When copying within of/after VRAMDIR about 10 MByte/s are realistic,
some non-practical of bench mark 35 MByte/s measured. In the unregistrierten
tri aluminum version VRAMDIR functions only 30 minutes long, afterwards
operate like had the fixed disks in place of the RAMs. VRAMDIR is the drop
oil, which lets the Windows-95-Rechner so correctly approximately run only.
For 10 $ Shareware fee one receives one which can be easily applied,
problem-free utility, which can surely use everyone. (se)
