To transfer data does the parallel cable have to have something special
about it or just have the right connectors on both ends?

Another option would be cable connection in Windows (usually in
Accessories/Communications menu), for data files only since it does not
copy system/hidden files. In this way, you will not need an extra soft but
it is a little bit boring to make it works at the first time. You will need
a cable to connect the parallel ports from one computer to the other.
