MEM STRUCTURE
A while back I have posted a mail that explained "how" the PC's MEM usage
is build up. Whatever you do try {after a reboot} to keep your PC "in good shape".
Printed further below is an old mail with examples as to "how to", but note that
not everything+every way+workaround is described there.
(eg f.e. also stop the auto loading of (16-bit) dll files from the SYS.ini or WIN.ini
files or from the AutoExec.bat or the Config.sys files. Also do not have other
applications running while using "heavy" MEM-consuming programs like MSK,
the DL,WORD,EXCEL, graphical etc.).
EXPLAINED
I also mentioned at that time, that installing 10GB+ in RAM on your PC
will not give you lesser "mem-errors", eg or error free sessions when
computing.
This since the RAM is only part of the "resources", and is mainly
used by the program's application files (stored in a program's folder)
and the user's files (stored wherever you have stored "your" files), eg
on Running(the application) and on Opening(the user's files).
UHUUU ?
Prior to loading the application(a program), a kix-start file(to enable PC to just 'only'
load that application) is being fired. When this "fire-ing" takes place the kix-start file
is always loaded in the PC's MEM BASE area (<650kB).
Each kix-start file is 4kb alone. Each kix-startfile is therefore required so
that the application's very basic and therefore minimum required startup files
('only' to enable an application's launch !) can get loaded in the higher
EXPANDED MEM (the LOWER MEM between 640kB and 1064kB) or
better, 'more' higher.
BASE MEM
In the old DOS days most applications(programs) wouldn't run if the
lower MEM was > 550kB. That was because of the BASE MEM's storage
size limitation and that the DOS OS couldn't "see" MEM >640kB.
(DOS was developed in the late 70'ees early 80'ees, and this 640 was
than considdered to be large enough!!).
-The first 120kB is reserved for the BIOS (i.e. drivers)
-the second 100kB for the Graphical (VGA) hardware (i.e. drivers)
-300kB is reserved for the OS (eg that is only 300kB for the minimum files
of an OS, and minimum for DOS6.2 alone was already 350kB)
-and the rest (eg between 520-640) is than left for (all) the kix-start files.
Note here that the kix-start files are also requierd to load the above OS's files.
EXPANDED or LOWER MEM(Block)
This area is reserved for the GUI's OS, eg
-the first 300 kB is reserved for the GUI's OS (Windows) environment and in it,
available space will also be used by other "adjecent" program's kix-start files
(to load the OS's compatible applications and files into the higher MEM area, eg
the EXTENDED MEM(XMS) area, that is located above the 1064kB level
and higher (this area's ceiling limit is than depending on the installed (V)RAM),
as well as for the other required files(drivers, dll's etc) for that OS and it's
applications and for the "compatible programs" application files, eg to enable
applications to kix-start and operate
-the rest below the 1064kB (eg the 120kB down to 944kB) is by default reserved
for the "kix-start" and alike files of the GUI OS's basic OS applications self.
Again see the heading at the top of this mail message, before continuing to read
the older mail below.
