Yes, consider software firewalls as an alternative to a hardware firewall. I
have heard good things about BlackIce. Also, there are at least three people
on this list, including me, who are happy with ConSeal PC Firewall available
from www.signal9.com
Unless you are running more than a SOHO network, a software solution will
probably do an excellent job at a much lower cost.
As an aside, the makers of ConSeal were acquired by McAfee and their lower-end
Private Desktop has been brought under the McAfee umbrella. PC Firewall,
which is still available without the McAfee consumer bloatware, is the more
comprehensive choice although it's not for the computer illiterate.
I'm sure the participants here would appreciate seeing what you finally choose
and why.
