RE: Point&Figure

TO: Ong Hock Choon,

I noticed the same thing a while back. I had a discussion with Equis, but
they clearly just don't get it! Here is what they told me - not much value.
"Approximations" are not good enough!

I obtained the data for this chart and what you are seeing is not a filled
in box it is the effect of the bottom chart scale on the screen. The
values on the price grid are not the values in the data file, they are
just approximations that help to visually identify where each box is in
reference to price the box represents.

If you want to see the actual value of each box click View|Data Window and
you will be able to see the actual value of each box in the column.

The program is not showing a number that doesn't exist. The 88^24 number
you see on the chart screen is not a number in the file. The numbers you
see on the right and left of a chart screen is just a visual sort of ruler
you use to visually identify the price each Point & Figure box is near.

In order for the chart windows to have enough room to display the data in
each chart the automatic scale of the chart must pick scale values that
are slightly below the smallest number in the chart and slightly above the
highest number in the chart. In this example the smallest value in the
chart is 89.0 so the automatic scale picked 88.75 which is a number
slightly below 89.0.

Think of the chart window like you would a box that put items into. For
example if I have an item that is 12 inches by 12 inches you could not put
it into a box that is 12 x 12 because it would not fit. You would have to
get a box that is slightly bigger than the 12 x 12 item. For example you
might have to get a 13 inch by 13 inch box to hold a 12 x 12 item.

A chart window is the same way. For the chart Window to display a price
graph (point & figure) with values of 89^00 to 90^16 it might have to
create a price scale of 88^24 to 90^24. Just keep this in mind when a box
is the highest or lowest total value in the chart and verify the values in
View|Data Window if you are not sure.

We are of course always working on better methods of displaying data in
charts so we will submit a suggestion on your behalf to indicate you would
like the bottom and top scale method of Point & Figure changed in a future
version if possible.
