I cant help you with your problem but you have made my day.
Back in the mid 60s, I used the granddaddy of Minitab, Omnitab. It is a
great program.  The program was so easy to use that the manual was little
more than a list of commands. Unfortunately because it was developed by the
Feds at a time when the Feds weren't interested in commercializing it, very
few people outside the government and the aerospace industry were aware of
it. I think that there is a PC version available.  Minitab was developed in
part by Brian Joiner, one of the best statisticians I ever deal with.

Excel does have some factor analysis capability, have you looked at it?
