Yes, #3 below--fixing System Tester so it can test a portfolio of securities
instead of just one--is essential in my opinion.

Ken,
The system tester definitely needs to be upgraded to be competitive.
Here are some areas that need to be addressed:
1. Use metastock formulas for calculating the actual entry price
and the exit price.
2. Provide functions that will return the entry price and exit price.
3. ***** The biggie is to provide for testing a portfolio of securities
instead of one at a time.
4. Provide buy & hold comparison statistics with a known index such as
the S&P 500.
5. Provide a graphical view of optimization results so that we can see
if a system is robust or if the parameters are overly tweaked.
Graphically,
you are wanting to avoid peaks of the infamous mathematical saddle and
looking for a range of values that gives good results.
There are probably some other good ideas but number 3 is the major
weakness in the system tester.
Thanks,
Ron Stockstill

We are always open to suggestions. We did solicit suggestions from this
list several months ago. Many of those suggestions have been seriously
discussed in our preliminary design efforts for the overhaul of System
Tester. If there are further suggestions that anyone may have, please send
them to us.
Version 7.0 was in fact designed according to user requests. Virtually all
of our enhancements are based on user suggestions.
I think some of the frustration from users on this list comes from the fact
that not all suggestions from list participants are implemented in the
program. The majority of our users do not participate on this list, yet
they are very active in making requests for program enhancements. We take
all user requests seriously, but that does not mean that we can absolutely
incorporate all suggestions in the exact manner that each user would like.
Just to give an idea of how difficult it is to incorporate user requests, I
distinctly remember the feedback we received from this list when we asked
for System Tester suggestions. While all of the suggestions were very good
in their own right, it was interesting how the individual list participants
were arguing amongst themselves in regard to which features were important
and which ones weren't. It can make for a daunting task for us when our
users have such a wide range of opinion about what is important and what is
not. We simply cannot be all things to all users. The result would be a
totally unusable program for everyone.
One thing does ring loud and clear: Users have been asking for an improved
system tester and we will provide it based on user suggestions. I cannot
promise that we will absolutely make everyone happy.

Ken:
When you guys begin to look at overhauling the system tester module, I
would urge you to solicit suggestions from the participants on this list and
use us as a sounding board for your ideas and plans. Set up an ad hoc
e-mail list if you think it's appropriate.
It seems that several of the enhancements in Version 7 were developed
in something of a vacuum -- fun gadgets and good ideas, but not really
useful to, or practical for, serious traders and investors, so not the best
allocation of your development resources.
