You do get a lock + key with a car, but if you don't lock it............. Even locking it, or
adding all kind of other types of security measures, will not prefent it not to get
stolen one day. And alike in everyday life above, there are many precautions that
one can take on themsleves, without having to rely on the article: wether it's
a car or (even) a software program.
It goes beyond the scope of the subject and the List, but apart from the above,
there are many other ways to enter one's disks and there are many ways to help
to prefent this. And like said above, you the user are in control, so you are the
best prefention & protection.
The most programs under attack are ofcourse the MicroSoft programs(he, lets
bash microsoft is the national anthom by the many). But, easely one can fire on
any program that is located on disk. It is the "access to" that's the key in these
types of attacks.
At work, we have had people fired since they were succesfully hacking and writing
scripts to easely enter in on Unix, HP-UX, Windows, Apache(Linux), Dell and other
types of mainframes & servers. It is a game and it will never stop/end. They were
finaly caught+fired in the end, since they were deleting + altering many company
files(and this by leaving their log-in names "behind" in log files). And I currently
know of one person that again has gained succesfull access, and being good
hearted, this person hasn't been "noticed" yet.
Since Microsoft is constantly under attack, it is also one's best safe-guard.
Microsoft acknowledges succesfull attacks (as far as I know also makes out wages,
eh "donations" to some hacker groups) and will immediatly react with patches
and other types of precautionitive instructions/measures or fixes. Therefore, it is
the safest program maker around. A very comforting feeling too.
Now lets look at the other co.'s. The not so popular or the downright unpopular
programs makers are scared to publish any succefull attacks on their software,
and will therefore not even make the Press. Let alone you will hear of them or
of any fixes. There is also yet another category, the not advanced programs.
By not having that many features, basicaly these programs are less viable for
attacks, and by not being popular too, these programs are not worth the time
spent by the many hackers/groups around.
But like comparing f.e. Windows OS to DOS, without the superior advancements,
then basicaly you are missing out on the current and future features and are also
at one stage or another, then running into the limitations of such a simple program.
Think, therefore that most of the html-mail questions on the List have (again) been
answered, and basicaly, these type of questions should not be addressed
to the List, but be solved by user himself in that particular program or via his/her's
inadequate or simple software program makers.
It is also the MetaStock-List after all they are writing to, where one joins to speak
investing and talk MetaStock instead of who-know-what-next-or-else-to-expect.
And then perhaps these type of mails and the many other off topic mails should
automaticaly be returned to sender, marked "addressee unknown". Where
addressee is then the
who-knows-what-form-who-knows-where-software-or-hardware-or-other-subject-maker.
List mails now are roughly 60 % on MSK and related. That used to be 90%.
Also there are many other general lists and newsgroups available for asking
general non-program or non-investing related questions. See ISP, public newsgroups
or some of my other favourites: Alta Vista and About.com
Upgrade or face the limitations (but then don't bother others with the side effects, eg
what if Win3.1.1/MSK4.x users will start to ask questions why this or that will not function,
and after explaining a couple of times that there are severe version differences...............).

Ton,
the mailer is Eudora Pro 4,2 and it works just well for me without having
shivers every time a new
virus or worm reach the net, they are, almost all, targeted to Outlook
Express & I don't like MS Explorer
for the same reason even if on the laptop I'm using it.
With time I've learned a lesson: don't jump on anything that hits the
market just because it is the
last novelty, but wait for the bugs showing up and be adjusted then
maybe...., I don't like
to pay to become a beta tester to me it should be the other way around.
Some months ago I posted on the list asking advice (MSW98 or MS2000 or
MSNT) and you responded
competently giving me an ample explanation of pros & cons of each OS, I've
changed my laptop the vendor gave me a
choice between MSW2000 or MSNT, my choice has been MSW98 and now that I'm
satisfied with 98 I'll upgrade my
other computers from 95 to 98.
When I've bought Eudora Pro 4.2 (circa 18 months ago) it was one of the
best mailing programs on the market and they
are offering upgrades but I will not upgrade because "rumors" are that you
are going to lose on the security side.
