Beware of "free" Office Suites SUN and others are offering. Many of these are
"web" based. This means you would access the spreadsheet and word processing
software via Internet Explorer or their specialized browser. It also means the
company could upload your data (spreadsheet or private letters) to their
servers. In many cases, you will actually store your confidential data on their
servers. Also, some plan to charge a small fee every time you use their
software online.
All forms of technology can and will be compromised. Anyone with the access at
the company could read your files. Anyone on the 'Net between you and their
servers could access your files. Do you really want someone to read your
files? Bill Gates mentioned this problem at a large conference last year. I'd
rather buy the inexpensive Corel Suite 2000 than use this type of software.
