Re: MicroSoft Office 2000 Service Release 1

-Microsoft Update servers aren't just "slow", but are so because of the trafficing through their
very security tight meassured proxy servers and cause of the users IE browser's security thight
settings and browser's build-in security precautions features
-Downloads using Netscape, will therefore NOT be a (by MS) quaranteed virus-free download
{eg you are at your own FULL RISK: than BEING largely exposed to the everywhere around "Internet crime"},
i.e. program misses out on the above advanced browser security features
-You should have upgraded to IE5.1 (minimum 40 min) which minor upgrade(for old 5.0 users)
includes most security patches {instead of 45 min downloading Critical 'security' updates} as well
  as lot more advanced stuff {for example my 5.5beta has got a Printer's Preview window}
-The Temporary Download Folders will be created "depending on the Update site you download from"
{here Microsoft did NOT change any previously used folder procedures}, i.e. downloading/updating from
the Windows Update site for Win95 is not the same as from the Win98 or Win98SE or the IE5x or
  from the OfficeUpdate sites.
-It is advised to wait for the SP-1 CdRom release (usualy 6-8 weeks after Official 'web' release)
-The referenced CD here is "the previous program version" {and not a change in 'fuzzy" copyright policies,
since this is done so for "ages"}, of which the minor versions are already always baked on the CdRom
{but there is no need for the CdRom, since you can always refere to the installed main program folder
  on your Disk}

Subject: MicroSoft Office 2000 Service Release 1

All,
I read on a computer PC tech review/news site that MicroSoft Office 2000 Service Release 1 just
came out. You can find it at:
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/

I tried using Internet Explorer v4.01 SP2 to get the Office Products catalog but it didn't work.
If you click on the Product Updates link on the above page and it doesn't work in IE, use
Netscape to get to the download link. MicroSoft's servers are incredibly slow. I suggest you
download the Office SR1 after midnight. SR1 is 26-40 MB's. For those of us unfortunate souls
who still have a 56K modem, it can take up to TWO (2) HOURS to download, even at top speed.
Still, I was able to download a 51 MB file in about 2 hours from another, much smaller, site.
You'd be surprised what a person can do with a 56K modem. That is, of course, if you download at
2 am. ;^)

A word of WARNING. I noticed on the information page this notice:
"To ensure the integrity of your Office 2000 installation, the SR-1 Update requires access to the
Office 2000 CD or your network installation location during the installation process."
MicroSoft's gettin' real fussy about illegal copying. If you don't have the CD, you can't
install it.

Before you try to install SR1, you should use the Windows 98 Update Internet page to at least
update your Internet Explorer update folder. MicroSoft recently changed the folder for
downloading updates from the 'Net. There are other "Critical" updates on the Windows 98 Update
Internet page which are also important. These "Critical" updates are mostly security updates. I
just got through installing all 5 or 6 listed on my page. It took about 45 minutes. I had put
it off for about 5 months. While you're at it, also update your Windows Media Player v6.4.

Daniel.
