Andy,
you are saying then, that a user can only reinstall MS Office 2000 twice?
This is what happens over here in NZ. I can't confirm it's the same in the
states, but it's my understanding that it is. Someone else can confirm/deny
this. The way it works is this: You install Office 2000 on your pc. It
generates a number based on the various serial numbers etc of components in
your computer, then spits out a number to either fax/email/phone to
Microsoft. They issue a muber to put into your pc and then Office is
registered. You can apparently change up to 5 hardware components in your pc
before the number doesn't work and the program assumes you've installed it
on another machine. I sell and install the software over here and have had
to on occasion install one copy on different machines. When I emailed the
numbers to MS, it allowed the original copy, and a subsequent copy when they
upgraded their machine. I tried for the thrid time with a different machine
again, and was declined by Microsoft with a message saying that this
software had already been installed twice and could not be installed again,
and to contact Microsoft. We did, and after explaining why it was been
changed (upgraded machine) it was allowed.
There was a huge outcry over here about this system when it was found out it
was to be introduced, with people saying that they have purchased the
software and they should be allowed to do what they want with it.
Unfortunately you're only purchasing the right to use the software, in the
same way that purchasing a movie ticket doesn't make the movie yours to do
what you want with it. I believe Microsoft (and other software
manufacturers) are likely to be heading down this path with a lot of their
software.
Again, this is what is the case in NZ.
Regards
Andy
