Re: stock software program can't read more than 255 ms files

Pete,

I'm not convinced that Metastock 6.52 can read more than 255 files per
directory, despite what Metastock help technicians say. I wasted a lot
of time blithely setting up a great number of securities and composites
in the Downloader based on this supposed new feature of 6.52. They
displayed just fine in the Metastock "Open" window, but when I sorted
them alphabetically in the Downloader, those after the letter "H"
disappeared. This coincided with the point at which I had reached the
255 file limit in my project. I tried again to create more than 255
securities and composites, and again, they got dropped off after I
sorted them. I am convinced they are still in my system somewhere, but
I was never able to figure out to access them. They appear in Windows
Explorer and Windows "winfile" (the old File Manager) with file names
like "f101.dat". And because they are not designated by security or
composite name, I can't figure out how to identify and manipulate them
to try to restore them.

The Metastock help technician I talked with couldn't figure it out,
either, so he took down the info and said he would get back with me. He
never did, and I didn't have time to putz around, so now when I start
approaching 255 files per directory, I create a new directory, just like
I did in older versions of Metastock.

If you are able to crack this nut, I would appreciate knowing how.

Regards,

Warren Donworth
