Heidi,
I've used Dial Data, Telescan, and Reuters Datalink. Of the three, I've liked
Reuters the best. For me, it is all about the amount of time I'm going to
spend cleaning up errors in my data each night. I haven't had as bad an
experience as others have had with Dial Data, and I thought they did pretty
well...until I tried Reuters. The download speed is much faster, customer
support has been good, and I just don't have any real trouble with my downloads
or the cleanliness of my data. I have made extensive use of the indices and
market breadth, highs, lows, etc. in charts, so I understand your reluctance
about symbol changes. It was a lot of work, but I save a lot of time not
flipping back and forth to Yahoo! Finance to compare or check some of my data
after each download.
Telescan was the most difficult. This was my most recent and briefest foray.
I had trouble finding their symbol lookup data. While their customer support
was readily available, they weren't very helpful. On my first pass they told
me that my problem was with Metastock and I should contact Equis. All I wanted
was a listing/table for their symbols. Arrrgggh! It was through the generous
help of this list that I found the table. After setting up all of my market
indicators, I realized that a fair amount of the data had holes in random
places like NYSE Declining Issues for one day is blank, then several days
later, it's another missing data point. Of course, my indicators were often
"blowing up" and leading me to seriously doubt my results.
I am in Phoenix, so my EOD downloads are quite a long time after the markets
close. For these comparisons, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect most
of the data errors for the day on any vendor's servers to be cleaned up by 8:30
or 9:00 pm EST.
So, perhaps I am blissfully ignorant with my Reuters Data, but I do have more
time to analyze, test, and work on systems rather than "data dogging" a whole
bunch of my tickers.
