I'm very happy with ConSeal PC Firewall.  Guy Tann uses it, too.  There's
a steep learning curve for the whole security issue, but I think it's worth
it.

It might slow your download, but unless it's a heavier ping attack (or
something similar), probably nothing.  In this case, you were probably being
pinged or, at worst, someone was scanning your ports to see if a trojan was
present on your system and ready to respond.  Like Demir mentioned, you
must protect yourself against trojans.
