All,
Not a good week, but not a really bad week either as my portfolio was
essentially flat for the week <G>. I was stopped out of PVN yesterday and
am now back to about 50% cash. Looking at the indices, that might be
justified as the Dow Jones Industrial Index did break through the bottom of
its Intermediate Term Up Trend Channel (ITUTC) by closing barely below the
bottom of the channel Thursday then well below Friday. The New York Stock
Exchange Composite Index has a similar pattern although it first closed
below the bottom of its ITUTC on Wednesday. The SPX chart looks very
similar to the DJIA and the OEX closed below its ITUTC Friday. The only two
that still look good are the NASDAQ OTC index which is still above the
bottom of its ITUTC and the Russell 2000 which is still above, but right at,
the bottom of its ITUTC.
Based on the above, my system says no new long large cap positions
until we break out of the Short Term Down Trend Channels (STDTC). It also
says it's still OK to nibble at long small cap positions, especially in the
high tech or internet industries, but only in small amounts with close
stops. With that in mind, I hunted for small caps in those industries that
were growing rapidly, but were still priced reasonably (PEG ratio under 1).
The results led to this weeks pick - Theragenics Corp (TGX). Theragenics
develops and manufactures therapeutic radiological devices used to treat
cancer. Physicians insert their short-lived radioactive products directly
into cancerous tissues for treatment. The company's TheraSeed product is a
radioactive implant used to treat localized tumors. Its TheraSphere product
is used to treat liver cancer.
TGX at 10 ¾ is in a Short Term Up Trend Channel (STUTC) with the top at
12 1/8 and the bottom at 8 7/8. It hit an all time high of 35 3/8 on 03/19
/98 then pulled back for a month before rising and setting a lower high of
34 5/8 on 04/21/98. From there it developed an Intermediate Term Down Trend
Channel by falling for over a year to a low of 5 on 03/26/98. It then rose
to form its current STUTC and broke out of the ITDTC last week. It pulled
back all of this week until Friday when it jumped up over a point to its
current position. I think its poised to move on up from here, but will wait
for confirmation by it trading above its 07/23/99 high of 11.31. The 55 day
Tema StochRSI is positive, but falling slightly. The 13 day Tema StochRSI
is negative and falling. They will both turn up if TGX does continue to
rise to trade above the 07/23/99 high. The Fundamentals are good with the
trailing P/E at 21 and the PEG ratio at 0.7, no debt, ROE at 15.7%, and 5 yr
revenue annualized growth at 58% and 5 yr annualized EPS growth at 84%. I'm
going to set a buy stop just above the last high at 11 3/8. If I get the
position, I'll set my target just under the 98 highs at 34 and my stop just
under the bottom of the STUTC at 8 ¾.
MetaStock charts of TGX and the above indices are posted at my web
site: http://www.geocities.com/WallStreet/Highrise/1025/
