I use Symantec's SystemWorks (which Best Buy had this weekend for $24.95
after rebate) and the AV protects you in 2 ways. First, it has an
auto-protect mode which operates all the time in the background checking
everything. Second, I have it scheduled to run a complete AV scan of my
14Gb of hard drives every day. It runs this about mid-afternoon
concurrently with whatever I'm doing. Yes, it does slow the system, but
only for about 10 minutes and yes, I can continue to work.
Finally, you get virus database upgrades for x months as part of the
service, and after that, I think, the cost is $3.95 a year. I check their
auto-update every Friday or more frequently if I hear of a new virus
floating around. I've found that by the time I hear of any new virus, worm,
etc., Symantec already has updated their AV database. I download these
updates over the Internet. If there is no new update, the checking takes
only a couple of seconds, otherwise it takes about a minute to download and
update all of my AV protection. Granted, I am connected to the Net via DSL
at 784kbs (or whatever that 7xx speed is).
AV protection should be on-going, in the background and unobtrusive. Aside
from that system slow down in the afternoon, I don't even know it's there.
Regards
Guy

Demir,
"1- Run your AV software at start up --- not just occasionally...."
Are you suggesting to run AV on **all** your hard disks, or just drive c:??
See, the problem is that I have about 15 gigs in my system, and I've found
that AV takes sooooo damn long.
Exasperated, I don't know what to do!
Thanks,
Nicholas
