Walter:

The price oscillator indicator will be positive or long when both moving
averages are up, and negative or short when both moving avrages are down.
You'll have earlier signals if you set it up like an macd with a trigger
line moving average.

The shorter moving average will be moving in a different direction to the
longer one at changes of direction of the trend.

My guess is that this will give you similar results as Onno's ROC
suggestion.
