I broke down and bought Symantec's SystemsWorks which handles the AV stuff
as well as scanning the Internet for updates to all of my software, etc.
Was able to buy it for $59 and that included some free AV updates as well as
6 months (I think) membership in their other stuff. So far, it appears to
have worked. Even if I forget, it automatically goes out over the Internet
and downloads the latest AV stuff.
I'm like you. I never open anything unless it's a joke from one of my
friends (I get about 10 of those a day <G>) or something I'm looking for.
Even then, I'll run it past the AV manually, just to double check. Knock on
wood, but I've managed to avoid getting a virus so far.
In addition, I use NetStore and back up nightly over the Internet. When I
go to shut down the computer, it asks me if I want to back up before I exit.
I always take the Yes option and it backs everything up and then turns off
the hardware. That's my ace-in-the-whole. They don't to any AV checking
because everything is totally encrypted and is never opened up on their
systems. For the $5 a month or whatever it costs me, I look at this as
money well spent. In the past I've lost hard drives and been 3 months
behind on my backups. Its taken me up to 2 or 3 months to reenter
everything.
Regards
Guy

That an e-mail came from a friend is no assurance of safety -- one of my
oldest and closest friends, whose computers I take care of, sent me two
copies of HAPPY99.EXE, which had come to him, it now appears, from a friend
in Africa, who got it from who knows where. I never "executed" either of
them -- his e-mails didn't tell me what it was about, and I am wary of
executables. He got stung and I didn't, but that's too close a call for me.
The person who sent it to him did send out a subsequent post on what was
going on and what to do.
Guy -- care to share your anti-virus protocols with us -- which you are
using, and has it caught anything??
