Allan McNichol,
System tester. Good question. Once you have a list narrowed down to those
you plan to implement you may want to run it by this list again for some
more feedback. I would also suggest those lurkers who would like a feature
added, but saw someone else make that suggestion. Still chime in with the
suggestion(s).
After some thought and after reading other suggestions for the system
tester. I have come to the conclusion that the more experienced traders are
requesting more complex tasks. Even as I look back to previous versions it
seems that there was a simplistic view of the system tester. From my
experience, my suggestions for the system tester are:
1) Being able to set a stop based upon a custom indicator. Along the same
lines then profits and losses would then be calculated based upon the actual
exit price.
2) Some user control over what the rules for re-entry after a stop or exit.
I can think of some special cases that might involve gaps.
3) To enter, exit or be stooped out of a trade based upon price, give or
take Epsilon. This would mean that my profit or loss would not be based upon
open, high, low or close. But would be based upon the price to which the
trade was actually entered. When I use the term Epsilon above I mean the
entry, exit or stop price would be triggered if the market price fell with
in a small epsilon neighborhood around my trigger line. Epsilon would
represent the spread that exists between the bid and the ask. It would be an
entry that the user would set up prior to using the system tester. Some
stocks have a 1/16 spread while others have 1/2 spread between bid and ask.
This way if the price crosses my signal line and I adjust the exit, entry or
stop by the spread. I would be getting a much better representation of the
trading environment.
3) Testing over multiple periods at the same time would also be helpful as
well. Both independent tests and dependent test. For example, test security
ABC on daily and weekly data and get separate test results. Then test
security ABC having entry and exit strategies check for both weekly and
daily conditions before the entry, exit or stop is actually triggered.
4) Testing multiple securities would save some time as well.
I am sure there may be more ideas as time goes on but this is it for now.
