Steve,
Actually there is no complete reference for Bollinger Fuzzy Logic. I have
seen no complete reference on the model. Here is how Equitrader is best
described in its help page.
EquityTrader is a service of John Bollinger's Acme Analytics. It is designed
to provide investors with a quick and easy method of
evaluating the past performance and potential appreciation of equities.
EquityTrader evaluates a universe of 3,600 stocks in two
dimensions: how they have done in the past and how they are expected to
perform in the future.
"EquityTrader" employs a fuzzy logic engine to evaluate 54 rules to
determine a stock's "Potential". Both fundamental and technical
factors are considered in arriving at the "Potential". The "Potential" is
the heart of "EquityTrader". It provides the model’s assessment of
the current return potential for a stock. The fuzzy logic model is unique to
"EquityTrader" and was developed by John Bollinger.
I have read some interesting an interesting book about Bollinger bands at
Traders Press from E. Dowson "Understanding Bollinger bands" ($8). If you
get it at John Bollinger's Web site, http://www.bollingerbands.com/ you will
get extra article from Technical Analysis of Stock & Commodities Mag, where
John Bollinger explains more its fuzzy loggic system.
I have also read "Technically Speaking: Tips & Techniques from 16 Top
Analysts" also at Traders press with an interview of J Bollinger which also
explains fuzzy logic.
Best material I have seen is John Bollinger Seminar where he started
explaining a little more Fuzzy Logic and how he was applying fuzzy
indicators to the system (basically it depends on the indicator he uses,
what he says is that Binary waves are not really adequate to determine where
you should buy or seel, if you use the RSI if the RSI is near 30 and up, the
security it is more likely to raise, but it is not accurate to say it is 0
at 29 and 1 at 30). Fuzzy Model starts basically applying a result to a
indicator from is value. John Bollinger applies a inversed linear function
to the RSI. If the RSI is 0, then the result will be 1 (buy), if the RSI is
0.1 then the result will be .9, if the RSI is 0.2 then the result will be
.8, and so on. Of course you have to determine the proper function to the
indicator you use, even with the RSI. Some are continious, some are
discountinious, some are parabolic. When this model is applied to a lot of
indicators (54 in equity analysis), then it becomes really fuzzy logic,
speaking of summed probalities on each indicator rather on binary
composites.
I am trying to construc one on Metastock, but it is difficult. It is a lot
easier with Excel.
Unfortunately, there is not a lot of material available for this model. I
have heard that John Bollinger has a contract to write a book about
Bollinger Bands.
If anybody knows more material about John Bollinger bands and Fuzzy Model
logic, just tell. I am looking forward to it ?
