Here in Akron, Ohio we have cable modems too. The local cable company,
Time Warner, has strung fiber optic on the poles through the neighborhoods,
and the drop from the street pole into homes is regular coax cable just
like what you put into your TV.
Its unreal fast. 12MB downloads from MM (that's Monopolistic Microsoft)
took 2.5 to 3 minutes. (Yeah, MINUTES). So go ahead and argue about
shared bandwidth, argue about EXACTLY how fast its going, but get it if you
can. It costs 40$ per month here, and everybody pretty much justifies the
extra 20$ (normal price for modem dial up service seems to run 19.95/mo) by
getting rid of the second phone line they had installed so you could voice
and data at the same time.

Stan and all,
They guarantee nothing. Why is everyone so concerned about shared
bandwidth
(Don't you realize that you share bandwidth with all the other users of
your
ISP when you use a modem). Data traffic is generally very bursty. Cable
modems are the fastest way to access the internet today that an individual
can afford. They are much faster the ADSL. If you have the ability to get
one in your AREA then you would be foolish not to consider it. I routinely
see speeds of almost 3 Megabits per second transferring files from work
with
two DS-3's to cable modem subscribers.
