A dongle can be any kludge connected to a circuit to configure it for a
special purpose.  In this application it is a security key that connects to
the printer port and looks like a 25 pin gender changer (that doesn't change
gender).  You aren't supposed to ask what is in it, might be a jumper or a
prom.

If you lease software options for a period they will send a security key
programmed with that information, when it expires you return it for a new one.
They work pretty well, in most cases the port can still be used for the
printer, but it is for the purpose of security and can be a nuisance if you
need to run the program on various PCs, or several keyed programs on the same
PC.
