Hi,
I don't recall having resource problems in earilier versions, but after
upgrading to 6.51, I started getting the dreaded Low Resources messages.
While I know 6.51 is more demanding, I laid most of the blame on my
always-lookin'-for-a-reason-to-crash-and-burn computer. I should mention that I
could stand to buy a new machine. Usually all I had to do was to close and
re-open Metastock to get things back to normal. I wrote Equis about the problem
and I've included their response below, which should be applicable to all
versions. Recently I had to re-format the HD (for reasons unrelated to 6.51),
which meant re-installing Metastock. Fortunately this seemed to straighten
things out. I no longer get the Low Resources messages. Most likely your
problem can be solved without using such an extremely time consuming (read:
#&%*!!!) method. ;-)
BTW, if I think of it, I try to remember to unload Norton A. V. and even my
screen saver before collecting rt quotes.
Regards,
Ken

Virus checking programs like Norton Anti-virus use a lot of resources.
Try shutting it down and run MetaStock Professional alone to see if this
message disappears.
In fact make sure you are not running another program in the background
that is using up all of your memory resources. You do this in Windows
95 as follows:
Start Windows 95.
Press <CTRL>+<ALT>+<DELETE>, to display the Close Program menu.
Disable all programs except Explorer. You disable a program by
highlighting the program on the Close Program menu and clicking the End
Task button. When you select End Task the Close Program menu will
disappear. Press <CTRL>+<ALT>+<DELETE> again and repeat this procedure
until the only program running is Explorer. Note: some of the programs
do not end the first time. You may have to select End Task a few times
to remove some of your programs from your Close Program menu.
When Explorer is the only program listed on the Close Program menu start
MetaStock Professional and use as normal. If the message disappears it
means one of the background programs is using up excess resources.
If you still receive this message when you are running MetaStock
Professional only it could mean one of your program files has been
damaged. If so make sure Explorer is the only program listed on the
Close Program menu then uninstall and reinstall MetaStock Professional
again. This will make sure that a program running in memory does not
interfere with the installation.
MetaStock Professional is a newer version than MetaStock 6.5. It
contains more features which means it can use more memory and resources
than the earlier 6.5 program because it capable of doing more. It is
also newer and uses newer video calls to create the image on the screen.
It is possible the video driver is not fully compatible. Try changing
your Video Settings as follows:
Click Start|Settings|Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.
Click the Performance tab.
Click the Graphics button.
Drag the Hardware Acceleration pointer to None and click OK. Window may
ask you to restart. If so answer yes and restart.
Start MetaStock.
If this does not work Start Windows95 in Safe Mode. To do this close
MetaStock and all other programs running in Windows 95 and click
Start|Shutdown.
Select Restart computer and click OK.
Watch the computer screen as the computer is starting and when you see
the words "Starting Windows 95" press <F8> (Function key F8) .
Select "Safe Mode" from the menu that appears.
Start MetaStock. If this works it means your video driver is not fully
compatible.
Contact the manufacturer of your video card and get the most current
version of the video driver.
Also if you did ever need to close MetaStock Professional during a real
time session you would not lose any data. Real Time collection uses
three programs to collect and store the data, Signals Data Manger
program, the Equis File Server and the Equis Data Sever. As long as
Data Manager, Equis File Server and Equis Data Sever are running you
will be collecting and storing real time data.
MetaStock Professional runs independently of Equis File Server and Equis
Data Server which means you can shut down MetaStock Professional and you
will not lose any data. It is designed this way on purpose so that
something like a system lock up or program crashes, which do sometimes
happen, do not interrupt the collection of your data .
