MetaStock has a built-in Julian calendar. It can determine Friday's
from that calendar. Therefore, if you select compress to weekly, it
finds Monday's and Friday's and compresses that data into a single bar
using the highest high and lowest low from Monday to Friday, and the
close from Friday. Volume and Open Interest are cumulated for the
entire week. If the week is short, meaning the last day of data is not
a Friday, the last bar will end with that last date.
The show weekends and holidays in chart functions, simply place the date
that has no data in the charts. By this I mean, if Thursday is a
holiday, there will be no data for that date. On Friday there is data.
MetaStock will plot the Thursday date, but there will be no data plotted
there. The same for weekends. A line chart would have a break in it.
There is no list of holidays. Dates with no data are not displayed in
MetaStock unless the show holidays is checked and then the date will be
shown but no data plotted. If your data vendor does not send data on
holidays, then this would leave a space. If your data vendor sends data
on holidays, and some send the previous days data, then that data would
be shown without this function being selected. Weekends work the same
way.

Subject: Holidays and Weekends
I was reading the manual for MetaStock 6.5 this morning about Holidays
and Weekends and the following questions popped up in my head: how does
MetaStock know about Holidays and Weekends?
For example, I trade exclusively on the UK Exchange and I would be
interested in seeing how the Holidays are calculated? Does MetaStock go
through the data files and look for missing days, or are the Holidays
around the world assumed to be the same as Uncle Sam's, or is there a
file used which holds dates and formulas (for example to calculate
Easter)?
Similarly with weekends; how are weekends (i.e. non-Trading Days) known
to MetaStock? Before one answers, that's easy, weekends are Saturday
and Sundays, please consider that some markets close on Thursdays and
trade on Saturdays. Once upon a time the UKSE used to trade on Saturday
mornings. So, how is it done?
As an aside, I would like to say well done to the manual writers -
they've done a fine job.
