You didn't say who wrote it, but regular Forbes columnist, Ken Fisher, son
of Warren Buffett mentor Phil Fisher, coined the term "super caps" a couple
of years ago. I keep his article pinned to the wall and update the list of
stocks biweekly.
Super caps are those stocks whose market cap is greater than the market's
weighted average. He said in 1996, "it's no longer large cap vs. small cap,
but super cap vs. everything else." Last time I checked there were 27 stocks
in this "bullet train" with GE as the locomotive and DELL the caboose. This
is down from 35 stocks when he first wrote about it. The current cutoff is
about $71 billion in capitalization vs. $36 billion in 1996. Fisher also
believed that the super caps will outpace "everything else" until the bottom
of the next bear market. Personally, I'm glad this was one "guru" I've paid
attention to :-)
