One note of caution for any of the WinNT and Win98 upgrades. BEFORE you perform your upgrade, go to the hardware vendors sites and get their latest drivers. Microsoft is a littler slow in getting the proper drivers installed on the CDs.

Another trick I use is to copy the upgrade install directory, i.e. I386 to the hard drive of the unit being upgraded. Then copy the proper drivers into their respective sub-directories. Then perform the install directing the install program to look for the files on the hard drive. Started this with problems in getting WinNT boot to recognize RAID drives.

Sean, I fixed the modem prob by just forcing my known modem driver on each
"unknown hardware" device detected by Win 98. My video card remains a
mystery- the Matrox Millennium card I put in today works like a charm.

My video chip [S3] is on the main board and Compaq is probably to blame [as
you say, never buy Compaq, but for some reason that is the only kind of
computer I have ever bought.]

Thanks for all your help in navigating the S3 site, by the way.

Tell everybody how important it is to have only one winsock.dll,
wsock32.dll, and wsock32n.dll file on their hard drive. And that that file
come from the right place.
