Jim,
I follow a similar process to what you do in that I copy and paste my
Metastock folder to a backup folder using Explorer. I do this on a
weekly basis in case something goes wrong with the Equis directory.I
haven't found a requirement to use the Downloader for this purpose
although I use Downloader when copying individual or several securities.
Works just fine.
