Well, I'm about ready to throw in the towel (although I *really* wanted
to be able to update the database on one of the client machines, and
not the server!) It would appear that the Downloader is hanging up
trying to do a DNS lookup. If I don't run the DNS Server on Wingate,
it reports that it is trying to resolve dd.tdc.com (or any other host
name I through at it). When I run the DNS Server (and point it to my
IP's DNS Server), then things resolve just fine -- except from
Metastock. For example, there is this rather nice shareware program
(DNS.EXE) which is good to check for the "reachability" of hosts
external to the network here. It actually helped track down a problem
with my Wingate configuration and DNS resolution. I thought, "Ah ha!
That was it!" Well, it was and it wasn't. I mean, it was a problem,
and it would appear that I can resolve host names just fine now from
the client machines, but Metastock still refuses to download quotes, so
either the Downloader isn't telling me the real problem, or else I'm
missing something obvious.
Here's the result of a DNS lookup from one of the client machines:

Done!
The Downloader gets to the dialogue box "Retrieving Internet Host Name"
and then fails. What in the world is it looking for?! A DNS lookup
should perform correctly, so I'm thinking it must be something else
after the lookup. I don't even think we're getting as far to actuallly
connecting to Dial/Data's server.
Another person wrote back and mentioned that he thought the Downloader
uses a telnet session. Sure enough, I telnetted out on the server and
got a unix login. So I created a Mapped Link in Wingate on port 23,
and now the client machine can telnet out just fine using Windows
telnet program. I set up the Downloader (under Advanced options from
the Dial/Data vendor menu) to point to the host machine on the network
running Wingate, which should relay and respond the network requests
just fine now.
And then, just because I like getting frustrated, I decided to try
WinProxy. Who knows? Perhaps Wingate wasn't relaying needed
information back? Well, in went WinProxy, works fine..... same
problem. I'm back to Wingate, though, because I liked it interface
better.
Arrgh! How frustrating. If anyone has a clue, I'd really appreciate
it.
Thanks!
