You are so right about the educational hole in AB when it comes to debugging.
I have just blissfully gone along without it because there is no obvious tutorial for it (there are so many learning challenges within AB that I don't go looking for trouble ... if I don't understand it and can't find a way to understand it in a hurry I avoid, it unless it is absolutely essential).... it is a somewhat ugly but time effective method.
