'Buy Side' refers to the side of the financial services industry that buys services from other financial services firms... in a nutshell 'buy side' generally means the fund management side of the business...

'Sell Side' refers to those financial services firms that sell services to other financial services firms... again, to generalize, this term is usually meant to refer to the investment banks.
