For a better Task Manager, you can try Process Explorer,
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx

One of the things you can do with it, is display the priorities of all your running processes.  And also observe when they are busy (which may be causing your trouble).

BTW, my laptop was making hard drive seeking noises for about 10 seconds, EVERY 30 seconds.  Very annoying!!  I discovered, using PE, that a Java process, jqs.exe, was doing it, even when I was running no Java programs at the time.  I suspended it, and so far, no problems.  InteractiveBrokers TWS uses Java, but it seems to display stock prices in simulated trading mode Ok (that's all I've tried so far).

That is the very problem I have with explorer in XP & Vista.
Any info on how to improve or eliminate this would be very helpful.  TIA

Hi,

I draw your attention on explorer.exe

Sometimes explorer.exe takes between 55 and 95% of cpu load. (Xp Vista...)
Explorer build an index of the sub-directories.

If so, there is an easy solution in killing a register.
