Update - thanks to AB tech support and for the sake of complete documentation for futures user searches.
For RT IB output to AB, for all NON - US symbols the IB format is SYMBOL-EXCHANGE-TYPE-CURRENCY
ie the currency & type is NOT OPTIONAL for NON US symbols.
Eg BHP traded on the ASX requires the full format BHP-ASX-STK-AUD
eg Macqaurie Bank is MQG-ASX-STK-AUD
