I have a cable modem that my ISP says can deliver 9Mbits/sec. After my cable modem, I have a Linksys router. I don't use WiFi - I connect my 2 computers via Ethernet lines at 100 MBits/sec. My DTN IQfeed & AmiBroker application is run on a dual processor machine with 4GBytes of memory. It appears that AB runs on one processor, and IQFeed runs on the other.
I regularly scan this machine for anything that may slow it down - tracking cookies, malware, viruses. BUT then I remove or disable all of that software because it takes CPU cycles & memory. I regularly check the process table looking for anything that is not absolutely necessary. It is a constant battle - all of those $%^&* helper programs.
When it is running, the CPU usage is very spikey, maxing out several times every minute. On average both CPUs are running at about 70% capacity on a typical trading day. I have auxiliary CPU cooling.
I have a second machine that I trade from - THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - you don't want your order entry computer locked up processing a burst of data when you're trying to enter an order ! ! This machine is logged on to Interactive Brokers. I have about 10 stocks/futures that I have on the IB TWS screen. Things are much more casual on this box - I can surf the net, check email etc.
Sometimes it feels like I have a real job :)
